25 of 25

Pattern: Motif 19 from the book The Tatted Artistry of Teiko Fujito.
Thread: Lizbeth size 20, col 129 purple splendor.
Technique: Shuttle tatted.

This is the largest item I've tatted so far. Actually it's not, but I managed to spill tea on the other one before I'd had a chance to take a picture of it and because it was white the stain was really obvious. Anyhoo, this one measures about 16cm across.

I really couldn't (and still don't) understand the instructions in the back of the book for the joining technique that was used so I resorted to using a lock join. I don't think it would have made so much difference if I'd been using a solid colour but the joins are more noticeable because of the colour changes. I'm still pleased with how this turned out and for the most part I enjoyed making it.

This marks my final 25 Motif Challenge item. I'm glad I joined the challenge as it's given me the motivation to seek out new patterns and it's exposed me to the work of other tatters. I think I will join for a second round however I think it will be more difficult to find patterns this time round. I have a number of books now but I like to mix it up with free patterns online so that if someone likes what they see then they can make it too without having to wait to order a book.

That join is also called the "slope and roll" join. there is an instructional sheet somewhere...not sure, I'll look for it later. The simple gist of it is that you are making a "shuttle" join with the ball thread. So you draw up a loop from the ball (or second shuttle), pass your working shuttle through, and then snug it down. You'll notice that it makes the tatting roll away from you a tiny bit. Teiko's instructions are a bit confusing because she is trying to show you how to use the join in her onion ring formations to leave a picot in the same spot. hope that helps!

Ah, okay I didn't realise it was that join. I have instructions for the slope join (pdf) but haven't used it yet and didn't realise it was the same one used in the book. Thanks for the pointer, very helpful.

Thank you all for the positive feedback it makes a person feel pretty good.

I'm looking forward to starting the challenge again and I might even dare to try some new threads as I've only really used Lizbeth.

You asked about doing another 25 and if you can do the same motif again, and the answer is yes. Some people have done all 25 using the same motif because they were making a large project that took several motifs. A motif is a motif and it doesn't matter which pattern you use.

Thanks for getting back to me. I loved doing the challenge and although I'll try to seek out new patterns I'm going to take the opportunity to do the ones I enjoyed again.
